This week I was working with two different clients on change management issues.  One the key issues in both cases was how the story of change gets told.  Whenever there is change, people need to understand it and make sense of it.  The mistake that many organizations make is that while they plan for change and provide resources for change, they often forget to provide their employees with a meaningful story to help them understand the change.  And in the absence of a story from leadership, employees will often create one themselves (“They are preparing for big layoffs” or “Our company is in financial trouble and they are getting desperate”).  Wouldn’t it be better if leadership took the time to help people tell the correct story?
